The Power of a Blessing

Have you ever had someone say something to you at just the right moment?  When words are spoken at the right time in the right way, they are powerful.  I love how Proverbs 25:11 says it, Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances.”  Just like a handcrafted piece is designed and perfectly to fit together, when words are appropriately spoken they are a thing of beauty.

Over the last several months God has been teaching me a lot about words and just how important they are.  In thinking about the course of my life, many of my most pivotal moments are tied to words people spoke about me or to me.  Their words of truth and kindness encouraged me.   Their words of insight and possibility challenged me.  Their words of support and love strengthened me.

God has been reminding me that just as people’s words have shaped me, my words have the power to shape others.  The words I say are important.  When I say them and who I say them to matters.  God wants to speak life-giving powerful words through me.  He wants to use me to bless, encourage, and strengthen.   I can learn to speak words that can change lives.

What about you?  When is the last time you spoke a word of blessing to someone else?  Have your words been used to impact others?

Today is the day for each of us to speak life.  Don’t wait.  Encourage and lift-up.  Strengthen and love.   Give and pour out.  And watch what God will do.
